This is a family shot taken in 1965, when I was 4 years old. I am the little one holding Dad's hand. If you compare my photo with Thia's drawing, you will see that she did a pretty good job of drawing me on that piece of cardboard that survives to this day. My brother Darwin "Bay" is sitting on the steps, next to Mom's sister, "Aunt Amy." Standing next to me is my sister Lynda, and next to Lynda is Phyllis, our cousin, Aunt Amy is her Mom. My Mom is hiding behind Phyllis. She never wanted to be in photos because she was fat and didn't want people to see fat pictures of her. Uncle Ed, who was visiting along with his wife Aunt Amy and their daughter Phyllis, obviously is the guy taking the picture.
This is the house I grew up in. 4071 Eagle St. My parents moved into it not too long after Dad secured his job at Ryan. It was in a nice neighborhood in Mission Hills. Back then working stiffs could afford to buy a house in Mission Hills. The house payment for my folks was $107. a month. Nowadays, the houses on Eagle St, and all the bird streets for that matter, require professional salaried people. Gone are the days of big Catholic families, with stay-at-home moms and Dad busting hump at the factory. You gotta be a lawyer or doctor to live in Mission Hills these days.
